The iOS 26.3 update has transformed the iPhone's Phone app into a proactive assistant. Two standout features—Hold Assist and Call Screening—are designed to eliminate the two biggest frustrations of mobile calling: waiting on hold and answering spam.
1. Enabling 'Ask Reason for Calling' (Call Screening)
Unlike previous versions that simply silenced unknown callers, iOS 26 can now interview them. Navigate to Settings > Apps > Phone > Screen Unknown Callers and select Ask Reason for Calling. When an unknown number calls, your iPhone will answer with an automated voice asking for their name and purpose. You will see a Live Transcription on your lock screen, allowing you to pick up, decline, or report as spam instantly.
2. Activating 'Hold Assist'
Hold Assist uses the NPU to listen for hold music. When you're placed on hold by a call center, a "Hold this Call?" banner will appear. Tap Hold and you can safely exit the call screen to use other apps. Your iPhone stays on the line, and the moment a live agent speaks, you'll receive a high-priority notification and a transcript of the agent's first few words so you can jump back in seamlessly.
3. Liquid Glass UI & Privacy
With the new Liquid Glass design language, these features are more integrated than ever. Because all processing happens via Apple Intelligence on-device, your call transcripts and audio never leave the phone. To ensure this works, verify that your Region and Language settings match in Settings > General, as localized AI models are required for the transcription to be 100% accurate.
