Whether you want to keep your personal and work numbers separate, or simply need two WhatsApp accounts on one device, there are several ways to do it depending on your phone. Here is a breakdown of every method that works right now.
Method 1: WhatsApp's Built-In Dual Account Feature
WhatsApp added official support for two accounts on one phone. This is the cleanest method because it requires no extra apps and is supported directly by WhatsApp.
On Android:
- Open WhatsApp and tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Go to Settings and tap your name or profile picture at the top.
- Tap Add account.
- Enter your second phone number and verify it via SMS or call.
- Set up your profile for the second account.
Once added, you can switch between your two accounts by tapping your profile photo and selecting the account you want to use. Notifications will show which number each message is for.
On iPhone:
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings (bottom-right tab).
- Tap your phone number at the top of the Settings screen.
- Tap Add account and follow the prompts to verify your second number.
Note: You need two active SIM cards on your device for this to work — either dual physical SIMs or one SIM plus an eSIM. If you only have one SIM, use one of the methods below instead.
Method 2: Samsung Dual Messenger
Samsung phones have a built-in feature called Dual Messenger that creates a fully independent clone of WhatsApp. The cloned app works as a completely separate installation with its own account and number.
- Go to Settings on your Samsung phone.
- Tap Advanced Features.
- Tap Dual Messenger.
- Find WhatsApp in the list and toggle it on.
- Tap Install when prompted. A second copy of WhatsApp will appear on your home screen.
Open the duplicate WhatsApp and register it with your second phone number. Both apps run independently — separate chats, separate notifications, separate contacts.
Method 3: Xiaomi / MIUI Dual Apps
Xiaomi and Redmi phones running MIUI or HyperOS have a Dual Apps feature built into settings.
- Go to Settings and search for Dual Apps.
- Toggle on WhatsApp.
- A second WhatsApp icon will appear in your app drawer, usually labelled with a badge or "2".
- Open the cloned app and register with your second number.
Other Android brands have similar features: look for App Clone (Oppo, OnePlus), Twin Apps (Vivo), or Parallel Space as a separate download if your phone does not have a native clone feature.
Method 4: Use WhatsApp Business as Your Second Account
If you only need two accounts and cannot clone apps, you can install WhatsApp Business alongside the regular WhatsApp app. They are separate apps and can run simultaneously with different phone numbers.
- Download WhatsApp Business from the Play Store or App Store.
- Register with your second phone number.
The limitation here is that WhatsApp Business is designed for business use, so some contacts may see the "Business" label on your profile. It works perfectly as a second personal account despite the name.
How to Manage Notifications for Both Accounts
With two WhatsApp accounts active, notifications can get busy. To stay organised:
- On WhatsApp's built-in dual account, notifications are labelled by account — you can customise sounds and notification tones separately for each account from WhatsApp Settings → Notifications.
- For cloned apps, go to your phone's system Settings → Notifications and manage the two WhatsApp apps independently.
- Consider assigning a unique notification sound to the second account so you always know which number is getting a message.
