How to Delete Your Gmail Account (Permanently)

Deleting a Gmail account permanently removes your email address and all associated emails. This action does not automatically delete your entire Google Account, but it is irreversible once completed. This guide explains how to delete a Gmail account using the latest Google Account settings.

Important Things to Know Before Deleting Gmail

Before deleting your Gmail account, make sure to back up any important emails or data. You can export your emails and other Google data using Google Takeout. Once Gmail is deleted, you will no longer be able to send or receive emails using that address.

If your Gmail address is used as a login for other services (such as banking apps, social media, or subscriptions), update those accounts before deleting Gmail.

How to Delete a Gmail Account

Follow these steps to delete your Gmail account without deleting your entire Google Account:

1. Sign in to your Google Account.
2. Go to Manage your Google Account.
3. Select Data & Privacy from the menu.
4. Scroll to Download or delete your data.
5. Click Delete a Google service.
6. Sign in again to verify your identity.
7. Select the trash icon next to Gmail.
8. Enter a non-Gmail email address to receive future Google messages.
9. Confirm by clicking the verification link sent to the new email address.

What Happens After You Delete Gmail?

After deletion, your Gmail address and all emails are permanently removed. You will no longer be able to use that Gmail address to sign in to Google services. Other Google services like YouTube, Google Drive, and Google Photos will remain active under your Google Account.

Can You Recover a Deleted Gmail Account?

Once a Gmail account is deleted, Google does not guarantee recovery. In some cases, recent deletions may still be recoverable for a very short time, but this is not guaranteed. It’s best to assume Gmail deletion is permanent.

Alternative: Delete Your Entire Google Account

If you want to remove Gmail along with all Google services, you can choose to delete your entire Google Account instead. This will permanently delete Gmail, YouTube, Google Drive, Google Photos, and all other associated data.
