How to Change or Reset Your Facebook Password

Whether you want to update your Facebook password for security reasons or you've forgotten it entirely, this guide walks you through both scenarios with clear, step-by-step instructions for mobile and desktop.

  6. Click Save Changes.
  7. You may be asked whether you want to log out of other devices for security.

  1. Open the Facebook app and tap the three horizontal lines (menu icon). The location may vary depending on your device or app version.
  2. Tap Settings & Privacy, then tap Settings.
  3. Under Security, tap Security and Login.
  4. Tap Change Password.
  5. Enter your current password, then enter your new password twice.
  6. Tap Save Changes.

  4. Click Search.
  5. Select your account if multiple results appear.
  6. Choose a recovery method: Email or SMS.
  7. Check your email or phone for the reset code or link.

  1. Open the Facebook app and tap Forgot Password? on the login screen.
  2. Enter your email address or phone number.
  3. Tap Find Your Account.
  4. Select how you want to receive the code: Email or Text message.
  5. Enter the code you receive and tap Continue.
  6. Create a new password.
  7. You may be logged in automatically or asked to confirm recent activity.

What If You Can’t Access Your Email or Phone Number?

If you no longer have access to the email address or phone number linked to your account:

  1. On the password recovery screen, click No longer have access to these?
  2. Enter a new email address or phone number where Facebook can contact you.
  3. Facebook will guide you through additional verification steps, which may include:
    • Identifying friends from photos
    • Confirming recent account activity
    • Uploading a government-issued ID
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions and wait for Facebook’s review, which can take a few days.

Tips for Creating a Strong Facebook Password

  • Use at least 12 characters for better security.
  • Mix uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
  • Avoid personal information such as names or birthdays.
  • Use a password manager to generate and store secure passwords.
  • Do not reuse passwords across multiple accounts.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

For added security, enable two-factor authentication:

  1. Go to Settings & Privacy → Settings → Security and Login.
  2. Under Two-Factor Authentication, click Use two-factor authentication.
  3. Choose your preferred method:
    • Authentication app (recommended)
    • Text message (SMS)
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup.

Once enabled, you’ll need both your password and a verification code to log in.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Not receiving the reset code? Check spam folders, confirm your email or phone number, and request a new code.
  • Account temporarily locked? Facebook may lock accounts after suspicious activity. Follow the verification steps provided.
  • Reset code expired? Codes expire quickly. Request a new one.
  • Can’t complete identity checks? Try alternate recovery options or wait before attempting again.

Quick Reference

  • Change password: Settings → Security and Login → Change Password
  • Reset password: Login screen → Forgotten password?
  • Lost access to email or phone: Use “No longer have access to these?”
  • Enable 2FA: Settings → Security and Login → Two-Factor Authentication

Note: Menu labels and options may vary slightly depending on your Facebook app version, device, or region.
