ChatGPT suddenly stopped working and you don't know why? Whether you're getting a blank screen, an error message, or ChatGPT is just spinning forever — you're not alone. This guide walks you through everything to try, from a quick outage check all the way to advanced fixes.

Step 1: Check If ChatGPT Is Actually Down

Before trying anything on your end, verify the problem is not on OpenAI's side. ChatGPT outages happen — usually during peak hours or after a major update.

  • Visit status.openai.com — the official OpenAI status page. Any ongoing incidents will be listed here.
  • Check Downdetector to see if other users are reporting problems right now.
  • Search X (Twitter) for "ChatGPT down" to see real-time reports from other users.

If the status page shows an active incident, all you can do is wait. OpenAI usually resolves outages within 30 minutes to a few hours.

Step 2: Refresh and Hard Reload the Page

Sometimes a simple stuck session is the culprit.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + R (Windows/Linux) or Cmd + Shift + R (Mac) to do a hard refresh — this bypasses the browser cache and forces a fresh load.
  2. If you're on mobile, close the browser tab completely and reopen ChatGPT.

Step 3: Clear Your Browser Cache and Cookies

A corrupt cache or expired session token can cause ChatGPT to get stuck or show login errors.

  1. Open your browser settings and go to Privacy & Security → Clear browsing data.
  2. Select Cached images and files and Cookies and other site data.
  3. Set the time range to All time and click Clear data.
  4. Reload chat.openai.com and log in again.

Step 4: Try a Different Browser or Incognito Mode

Browser extensions, saved settings, or a corrupted profile can interfere with ChatGPT. Incognito mode disables most extensions and loads a clean session.

  • Chrome: Press Ctrl + Shift + N to open incognito.
  • Safari: Press Cmd + Shift + N for a private window.
  • Or try a completely different browser — if it works there, the issue is browser-specific.

Step 5: Disable VPN or Browser Extensions

A VPN can sometimes trigger OpenAI's rate limiting or geographic restrictions, and certain extensions (ad blockers, privacy tools) are known to break ChatGPT's interface.

  1. Temporarily disable your VPN and reload ChatGPT.
  2. If you have an ad blocker (uBlock Origin, AdGuard), pause it for chat.openai.com.
  3. Disable extensions one at a time to find the culprit if the problem persists.

Step 6: Check Your Internet Connection

ChatGPT streams responses in real time — an unstable connection causes it to hang or fail mid-response.

  • Run a quick speed test at fast.com.
  • If on Wi-Fi, move closer to your router or switch to mobile data to test.
  • Restart your router — unplug it for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.

Step 7: Log Out and Log Back In

An expired authentication session can cause ChatGPT to silently fail without showing a useful error.

  1. Click your profile icon (bottom-left corner of ChatGPT) and select Log out.
  2. Close the tab, reopen it, and sign back in.
  3. If you use Google or Microsoft to sign in, make sure that account isn't having its own issues.

Step 8: Try the ChatGPT Mobile App

If the web version is broken, the iOS or Android app often still works — it connects to the same backend but through a different pathway.

  • Download the official ChatGPT app from the App Store or Google Play.
  • Sign in with the same account and test whether the issue is browser-only or account-wide.

Step 9: Check Your Account Limits

Free ChatGPT accounts have hourly usage limits. If you've been chatting heavily, you may have hit the cap temporarily.

  • Look for a message saying "You've reached the limit" or a countdown timer in the interface.
  • Wait for the limit to reset (usually 1–3 hours on free tier) or upgrade to ChatGPT Plus for higher limits.

Step 10: Check for Account or Payment Issues (ChatGPT Plus)

If you're a paid subscriber and ChatGPT suddenly stops working, a failed payment can suspend your access.

  1. Go to Settings → Billing inside ChatGPT.
  2. Check if your subscription is active and no payment has failed.
  3. Update your payment method if needed and retry the charge.

Quick Summary: Fix ChatGPT Not Working

  • āœ… Check status.openai.com for outages first.
  • āœ… Hard refresh the page (Ctrl + Shift + R).
  • āœ… Clear browser cache and cookies.
  • āœ… Test in incognito or a different browser.
  • āœ… Disable VPN and ad blockers.
  • āœ… Check your internet connection.
  • āœ… Log out and log back in.
  • āœ… Try the ChatGPT mobile app.
  • āœ… Wait if you hit the free-tier usage limit.
  • āœ… Check billing if you're a Plus subscriber.

Most ChatGPT issues are resolved by clearing the cache or waiting out a brief server outage. If none of these steps work, contact OpenAI support directly.
