The phone you should buy in October 2026 is not the same answer we would have given in June. Apple has shipped the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, the iPhone Duo foldable is days from release, and Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 lineup is already in stores. The Galaxy S26 series and Pixel 10 family are still excellent — they are just no longer the newest option in every category.

This guide picks one phone for each kind of buyer, using the models you can actually get now (or pre-order this month). Prices are US starting prices.

Quick Picks

  • Best phone overall: iPhone 18 Pro Max
  • Best smaller flagship: iPhone 18 Pro
  • Best Android phone: Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra
  • Best new foldable: iPhone Duo (available October 23)
  • Best Android foldable: Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra
  • Best camera software: Google Pixel 10 Pro
  • Best value flagship: OnePlus 14
  • Best phone under $800: iPhone 17 or Galaxy S26

1. iPhone 18 Pro Max — Best Phone Overall

If you want the most complete phone you can buy right now, get the iPhone 18 Pro Max. It launched at Apple's Surprise and Shine event on September 9 and has been in stores since September 18. The headline upgrades over the iPhone 17 Pro Max are a 48MP variable-aperture main camera (ƒ/1.48 to ƒ/4.0), the A20 Pro on 2nm, and the largest battery jump Apple has put in an iPhone: up to 30 hours of typical use and up to 45 hours of video playback.

The 6.9-inch ProMotion display hits 3,000 nits, the Dynamic Island is smaller and can show three Live Activities at once, and it ships with iOS 27 and Siri AI. Storage starts at 256GB and goes up to 2TB. The catch is price: $1,299, $100 more than last year's Pro Max.

  • Best for: People who want the longest battery life and the most control over photos
  • Starting price: $1,299
  • Key specs: A20 Pro, 6.9" OLED, variable aperture, C2 modem, Wi-Fi 7

Full breakdown: iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.

2. iPhone 18 Pro — Best Smaller Flagship

The iPhone 18 Pro has the same A20 Pro chip, the same variable-aperture triple camera, and the same iOS 27 software as the Pro Max, in a 6.3-inch body. Battery life is closer to last year's Pro Max — up to 36 hours of video playback — which is still a full day for most people. It starts at $1,199.

Choose this over the Pro Max if you do not want a 6.9-inch phone in your pocket. Choose the Pro Max if battery life is the reason you are upgrading.

  • Best for: Flagship iPhone buyers who prefer a smaller phone
  • Starting price: $1,199
  • Key specs: A20 Pro, 6.3" ProMotion OLED, 48MP variable aperture, 4x/8x telephoto

3. Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra — Best Android Phone

On Android, the Galaxy S26 Ultra is still the phone to beat. It uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy (Exynos 2600 in some regions), a 6.9-inch QHD+ AMOLED, a 200MP main camera at f/1.4, a 5x periscope, the S Pen, and seven years of OS updates. It starts at $1,299, the same shelf as the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Pick the S26 Ultra if you want a stylus, faster wired charging (60W), and Samsung's Galaxy AI tools. Pick the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you want Apple's variable aperture, longer quoted battery life, and iOS 27.

  • Best for: Android power users, S Pen owners, photographers who want a 200MP sensor
  • Starting price: $1,299
  • Key specs: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, 6.9" QHD+ AMOLED, 200MP f/1.4, S Pen, 60W charging

4. iPhone Duo — Best New Foldable

The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable, announced September 9. It is not in stores yet: pre-orders open October 16 and it ships October 23. Closed, it has a 5.4-inch outer display. Open, the inner screen is 7.6 inches. It runs the same A20 Pro as the 18 Pro, uses Touch ID in the side button instead of Face ID, and starts at $1,999 for 256GB.

It is the phone to buy if you specifically want an iPhone that opens into a small tablet and you can wait until the end of October. It is not the phone to buy if you want the best camera — the Duo has a dual rear system, not the 18 Pro's variable-aperture triple camera.

  • Best for: iPhone owners who want a book-style foldable
  • Starting price: $1,999
  • Key specs: A20 Pro, 7.6" inner display, 5.2mm open, IP68, eSIM only

Details: iPhone Duo.

5. Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra — Best Android Foldable

If you want a foldable you can buy today, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is the one. It has an 8.0-inch inner display, a 6.5-inch cover screen, a built-in S Pen, 16GB of RAM, a 5,000mAh battery with 45W charging, and a 200MP main camera with 5x and 10x telephoto. It starts at about $2,199 for 512GB.

The standard Z Fold 8 ($1,799) is the better buy if you do not need the stylus or the bigger battery. The Z Flip 8 ($1,099) is the compact clamshell if you want a phone that folds in half and disappears in a pocket.

  • Best for: Android multitasking and stylus notes on a folding screen
  • Starting price: about $2,199 (512GB)
  • Key specs: Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, 8.0" inner display, built-in S Pen, 5,000mAh

Compare all three: Galaxy Z Fold 8, Fold 8 Ultra, and Z Flip 8.

6. Google Pixel 10 Pro — Best Camera Software

The Pixel 10 Pro will not win a benchmark chart against the A20 Pro or Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. It will take excellent photos with less effort. Tensor G5, a 50MP main camera, a 48MP 5x periscope, 16GB of RAM, and seven years of updates for $999 make it the clean-Android pick in 2026. The Pixel 10 Pro XL ($1,199) adds a larger battery if you want the bigger Google phone.

  • Best for: People who care more about photos and software updates than peak gaming speed
  • Starting price: $999
  • Key specs: Tensor G5, 6.3" LTPO OLED, 50MP + 48MP 5x + 48MP ultrawide, Android 16

More Pixel options: best Google Pixel phones in 2026.

7. OnePlus 14 — Best Value Flagship

The OnePlus 14 is the flagship that does not ask you to spend $1,200. It uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, a 6.82-inch LTPO display, a 6,000mAh battery, and 100W charging, starting at $799. The Hasselblad-tuned 50MP triple camera is not the S26 Ultra, but the speed and charging are hard to argue with at this price.

  • Best for: Buyers who want current flagship speed without Ultra pricing
  • Starting price: $799
  • Key specs: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, 6.82" LTPO AMOLED, 100W, 6,000mAh

8. iPhone 17 and Galaxy S26 — Best If You Do Not Need the Newest Pro

You do not have to buy a September phone. The iPhone 17 still starts at $799 with the A19 chip, a 48MP main camera, and full support for iOS 27. The iPhone 17 Pro ($999) remains a strong buy if the 18 Pro's variable aperture and extra $200 do not matter to you. Our earlier best iPhones guide still covers the 17 Air and 17e if you want the thin model or the cheapest new iPhone.

On Samsung's slab lineup, the Galaxy S26 ($799) and S26+ ($999) are the right step down from the Ultra. They share the flagship chip and seven years of updates, without the 200MP camera or S Pen.
