At its Surprise and Shine event on September 9, 2026, Apple turned the spotlight on the wrist — unveiling the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. Rather than a cosmetic refresh, this year's lineup is built around a new Health Sensing System, the powerful S11 chip, and a suite of Apple Intelligence features Apple is calling Audio Intelligence. Both watches start at the same prices as last year — $399 for the Series 12 and $799 for the Ultra 4 — and ship starting Friday, September 18.

What Apple Announced at Surprise and Shine

The event was framed around health, fitness, and intelligence on the wrist. Apple positioned the new watches as its most advanced wearables yet — not just for athletes and adventurers, but for anyone who wants deeper insight into recovery, stress, and daily readiness. The headline upgrades apply to both the Series 12 and Ultra 4:

  • S11 chip — Apple's most powerful wearable processor, replacing the S10 from 2024
  • Health Sensing System — new optical and electrical heart sensors for continuous, high-fidelity monitoring
  • Readiness score — a daily 0–10 score with actionable recommendations
  • Audio Intelligence — Live Rewind, Siri Recap, Sound Recognition, and automatic Shazam detection
  • watchOS 27 — with Siri AI, a redesigned app grid, and new Smart Stack gestures

Apple also announced the Apple Watch SE 3 at the same event as a budget entry point, but the Series 12 and Ultra 4 are where the meaningful hardware and sensor upgrades live.

The S11 Chip: What Powers It All

The S11 chip is the engine behind virtually every major new feature on both watches. Apple says it enables heart rate measurements up to 60 times more frequently than the Series 11, with readings taken every five seconds throughout the day. HRV (heart rate variability) is now measured up to 24 times more often, giving users far richer data on stress and recovery.

The S11 also includes a Secure Exclave — a hardware-isolated compartment that processes audio for Audio Intelligence features in complete isolation, then immediately deletes the raw audio. This is how Apple enables conversation-aware features without storing recordings.

On top of health processing, the S11 powers more accurate step tracking through redesigned machine learning pedometer algorithms, a new real-time Steps watch face complication, and the on-device processing needed for Siri AI in watchOS 27.

Health Sensing System: The Biggest Upgrade

Apple's new Health Sensing System is a re-architecture of the watch's heart monitoring hardware. It combines larger, more power-efficient green LEDs on the optical sensor with upgraded electrical heart sensors for better ECG measurements.

Apple claims the result is the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable, backed by a study of over 1,000 participants comparing Apple Watch against leading competitors. Whether that claim holds up in independent testing remains to be seen, but the sensor upgrade is real and substantial.

Continuous Heart Rate & HRV

Heart rate is now measured passively every five seconds, all day — not just during workouts. Users can see their real-time heart rate at a glance via a new watch face complication or in the updated Heart Rate app.

HRV gets two distinct variants for the first time:

  • Recovery HRV — best for daily stress and recovery signals
  • Overall HRV — better for broader cardiovascular health insights

Overnight vitals now include recovery HRV analyzed against your personal baseline, and a new daytime vitals view lets you toggle between overnight and daytime metrics — potentially catching shifts in your health before they show up overnight.

Readiness: Your Daily Body Score

Both watches introduce readiness — a feature that analyzes recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep score to produce a single 0–10 score each morning with one of four recommendations:

  • Recover
  • Pace Yourself
  • Ready
  • Go For It

The score updates throughout the day as new data comes in — so a hard midday workout or a shift in daytime vitals will adjust your recommendation. The algorithm was developed using data from the Apple Heart and Movement Study. If you have used Oura Ring's readiness score or Whoop's recovery metric, this will feel familiar — but Apple is bringing it to the mainstream wrist.

Audio Intelligence: Apple Intelligence on Your Wrist

One of the most talked-about additions is Audio Intelligence — a new class of Apple Intelligence features that use the watch's built-in microphone, the S11 chip, and Apple Intelligence models on iPhone (via Private Cloud Compute) to help you stay present and aware throughout the day.

Live Rewind

Double-press the Digital Crown to see the previous 15 seconds of a conversation displayed as a text snippet. Missed what someone said? Live Rewind catches it. You can ask Siri about the content or save it to the Siri app for later. An audible chime and full-screen animation play when activated — even if the watch is on silent — so people nearby know the feature is active.

Siri Recap

After a conversation, Apple Intelligence automatically generates a title and key points in the new Siri app — a high-level summary, not a full transcript. Designed to help you stay engaged in the moment without worrying about remembering everything afterward.

Sound Recognition

Alerts users who are deaf or hard of hearing to important environmental sounds — sirens, alarms, doorbells, baby crying — even when their iPhone is not nearby. Uses on-device intelligence for detection.

Automatic Shazam

Detects music playing around you and displays the song title and artist on the Music Recognition widget in the Smart Stack — no manual activation required.

Siri Recap and Live Rewind arrive in beta later this year. All Audio Intelligence features are opt-in, do not store audio recordings, and do not identify or attribute speakers.

Apple Watch Series 12: What's New

The Series 12 comes in 42mm and 46mm sizes and is available in three case materials for the first time — aluminum, titanium, and ceramic.

Design & Materials

  • Aluminum: dark bronze, black, light gold, and space gray — now with Ceramic Shield 2 glass, 60% tougher than previous Ion-X aluminum models
  • Titanium: radiant gold and natural titanium
  • Ceramic (new): pearl white and night blue — starting at $899

Aluminum models are IP6X dust-rated and water resistant to 50 meters. The ceramic Series 12 is the heaviest option at 42.8g (42mm) and 52.9g (46mm), but offers a premium finish unlike anything in previous Apple Watch lineups.

Display & Specs

  • Always-On Retina LTPO3 OLED wide-angle display
  • Up to 2,000 nits peak brightness
  • 42mm: 374 × 449 pixels / 46mm: 416 × 496 pixels
  • 64GB storage, Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi 4, L1 GPS

Battery & Charging

  • Up to 24 hours everyday use (unchanged from Series 11)
  • Up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode
  • Up to 10 hours during outdoor workouts — 25% more than Series 11

Series 12 Pricing

  • Aluminum (GPS): from $399
  • Titanium: from $699
  • Ceramic: from $899

Apple Watch Ultra 4: Built for Endurance

The Ultra 4 keeps the rugged 49mm titanium design language from the Ultra 3 but packs the same S11 chip and Health Sensing System inside. Apple is targeting athletes, hikers, divers, and anyone who needs a watch that lasts longer and tracks harder.

Design

Available in natural titanium and black titanium. The physical design is nearly identical to the Ultra 3 — same 49mm case, same 3,000-nit display, same Action Button, siren, and depth gauge. The upgrades are almost entirely internal.

Battery Life: The Ultra 4 Headline

This is where the Ultra 4 justifies its $799 price over the Series 12 for serious outdoor users:

  • Up to 50 hours everyday use — up from 42 hours on Ultra 3
  • Up to 84 hours in Low Power Mode — up from 72 hours
  • Up to 25 hours Extended Workout mode with full GPS and heart rate — 25% increase
  • Up to 45 hours Max Extended Workout mode — enough for a 100-mile ultramarathon
  • 15 minutes of charging adds up to 18 hours of use

Apple also claims the Ultra 4 has the most accurate on-device GPS in a sports watch, with precision dual-frequency GPS (L1 and L5) and GPS readings every second in Max Extended Workout mode.

Ultra-Exclusive Features

  • Water resistant to 100 meters with depth gauge to 40m and Oceanic+ dive computer support
  • Tested to MIL-STD 810H military durability standard
  • Built-in siren for emergency signaling
  • Night Mode for low-light visibility
  • Triple-mic array and dual speakers
  • 5G cellular and satellite emergency communications

Ultra 4 Pricing

Starts at $799 — the same launch price as the Ultra 3.

watchOS 27: The Software Story

Both watches ship with watchOS 27, available as a free update on Monday, September 14 for Apple Watch Series 9 or later, SE 3, and Ultra 2 or later. Requires iPhone 11 or later with iOS 27.

Key watchOS 27 features beyond health and Audio Intelligence:

  • Siri AI — personal context understanding and broad world knowledge on the wrist, with a new Siri Modular watch face
  • Dynamic app grid — Siri-suggested apps based on your most-used and recently used apps
  • Single tap gesture — tap index finger and thumb to open Smart Stack widgets; double tap to scroll, single tap to select
  • Smart Stack suggestions — contextual widgets like Parked Car from Maps or birthday messages
  • Perimenopause and menopause support in Cycle Tracking
  • Workout Buddy — now works without iPhone nearby, with Spanish language support added

Apple Intelligence on watchOS 27 launches September 14. Siri AI rolls out as a beta in English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish coming in October.

Redesigned Health App on iPhone

Arriving later this year on iPhone (starting in U.S. English), the redesigned Health app ties the watch experience together on the phone:

  • Insights tab — AI-powered summaries that update throughout the day across heart, sleep, readiness, fitness, vitals, and cycle tracking
  • Longevity tab — longitudinal health analysis including Health Age, showing how your metrics compare to your actual age
  • Movement evaluations — flexibility, strength, and balance assessments using iPhone camera and Apple Watch heart rate data
  • Lab scheduling — book Quest Diagnostics labs with 50+ biomarkers for $119 directly through the Health app at ~2,000 U.S. locations

Series 12 vs Ultra 4: Which Should You Buy?

Both watches share the S11 chip, Health Sensing System, readiness score, Audio Intelligence, and watchOS 27. The decision comes down to how you use your watch:

  • Choose Series 12 if: You want the new health features and Apple Intelligence at the lowest price ($399). The ceramic and titanium options offer premium finishes without Ultra bulk. Everyday battery life of 24 hours is sufficient for your routine.
  • Choose Ultra 4 if: You need multi-day battery (50 hours), serious outdoor GPS tracking, dive support to 40m, military-grade durability, 5G cellular, satellite SOS, or the siren. The Max Extended Workout mode (45 hours) is built for ultramarathoners and multi-day hikers.
  • Skip the upgrade if: You have a Series 10 or Ultra 2 and don't care about readiness scores or Audio Intelligence. The sensor and chip upgrades are meaningful but not transformative for casual users.

Availability & Pre-Orders

  • Pre-orders: Open now (September 9, 2026)
  • In-store availability: Friday, September 18, 2026
  • watchOS 27 release: Monday, September 14, 2026

  • 📅 Event: Surprise and Shine — September 9, 2026
  • Series 12: From $399 — S11 chip, ceramic option, Ceramic Shield 2, 24hr battery
  • 🏔️ Ultra 4: From $799 — 50hr battery, 45hr max workout tracking, best GPS

  • 🧠 AI: Audio Intelligence — Live Rewind, Siri Recap, Sound Recognition, Shazam
  • 📱 Software: watchOS 27 with Siri AI — releases September 14
  • 🛒 Ships: September 18, 2026

Apple's Surprise and Shine event made one thing clear: the Apple Watch is no longer just a notification mirror or step counter. With the S11 chip, continuous health monitoring, readiness scoring, and Audio Intelligence, Apple is positioning the wrist as the most personal health and AI interface in its ecosystem. Whether that vision matches how you actually use a smartwatch is the real buying question — but on paper, Series 12 and Ultra 4 are the most capable Apple Watches ever made.
